The application and selection process comprises three principal stages:1) Preparation and submission via F6S (applicant creates account, completes online form, uploads required documents), 2) Eligibility check (administrative check against mandatory criteria), 3) Internal evaluation (academic review by a three-person panel) followed by ranking, offers, enrolment and onboarding. There is also an optional redress/appeal stage for procedural appeals.

Success Rates

The call will award up to 12 scholarships. The call materials do not disclose the expected number of applicants; therefore an exact success rate cannot be determined from provided documents. The maximum number of awards is 12; success rate will equal 12 divided by the number of valid eligible applicants once the application window closes and participant count is known. Historically for similar competitive internships, success rates can vary widely (single-digit percentages to higher) depending on outreach and applicant pool; prospective applicants should assume competition and ensure documentation and motivation statements are strong.

Co-funding Requirement

No co-funding contribution by applicants is requested in order to receive the stipend. The stipend is a fixed amount intended to support participation. Applicants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation and subsistence costs beyond what the stipend covers. There is no requirement to provide matching funds or institutional co-financing for the stipends.

Only one proposal or application is accepted per candidate. Incomplete applications, late applications, submissions through any route other than F6S, missing mandatory documents, or documents submitted in an unacceptable format may be rejected at the eligibility stage.

Application and selection process

The call uses a single-stage process. Applications are submitted exclusively through F6S and first undergo an eligibility check. Eligible applications are then assessed by a panel of three academics or researchers from the TUS IDEAM Research Institute.

The guidelines provide the following indicative timetable:

StageIndicative date
Call opening22 October 2026
Application deadline1 March 2027
Evaluation2 to 12 March 2027
Results notification15 March 2027
Enrolment16 March to 1 June 2027
Programme start7 June 2027
Programme end27 August 2027

The portal metadata identifies the deadline as 1 March 2027 at 15:00 Brussels time, while the applicant guidelines refer to 17:00 CET and the supplied opportunity metadata records 16:00 UTC. Because these references are inconsistent, applicants should treat the earliest stated portal time as the practical deadline and verify the live F6S and Funding and Tenders Portal timestamps immediately before submission.

Applications must achieve at least 15 points to remain eligible for a scholarship according to the stated evaluation threshold. Eligible candidates are ranked by merit, and awards are offered in ranking order until the available places are exhausted.

Evaluation criteria

The published evaluation framework uses a scale from 1 to 5 for each criterion. The guidelines describe the following assessment areas:

CriterionWhat applicants should demonstrate
Knowledge of the renewable energy sectorUnderstanding of fundamental renewable-energy and energy-system concepts, evidenced through qualifications, experience, or the CV
Relevant qualifications or experienceAcademic qualifications or professional experience relevant to offshore renewable energy, engineering, computing, technology, or energy systems
Motivation to undertake the internshipClear connection between career objectives, the internship, and wind and energy systems
Commitment to diversity, equality, and gender balanceAwareness of and commitment to inclusive participation and the relevant Digital Europe objectives

Applicants should make the motivation statement specific rather than generic. Strong applications should connect previous education or work experience to offshore wind, grid integration, energy storage, digitalisation, or related topics and explain how the internship supports a credible career plan.

Where applicants have similar scores, the guidelines indicate that ranking may be resolved by considering relevant experience, relevant qualifications, motivation, and commitment to diversity, equality, and gender balance in sequence. A short interview may be used as a final tie-breaker if necessary.

Enrolment and participant obligations

Successful applicants must confirm their intention to accept the offer within one week of notification, unless the implementing organisation specifies a different period in the formal offer. Admission remains subject to confirmation by the programme board and completion of TUS registration requirements.

Selected applicants must complete the relevant TUS application and registration process and sign the applicable learner or postgraduate student agreement. The agreement may contain obligations concerning attendance, academic participation, use of funds, reporting, confidentiality, data processing, audits, and compliance with the DigiWind project requirements.

Physical attendance in Limerick is mandatory. The stipend may be withheld, reduced, or otherwise affected if attendance requirements are not met. Applicants should not assume that remote participation is an acceptable substitute for in-person attendance.

Participants are expected to complete assignments and presentations and to comply with TUS academic regulations. The 10 ECTS outcome depends on successful completion of the academic and programme requirements and should not be regarded as automatic solely because an applicant receives the stipend.

Visa, insurance, confidentiality, and data protection

Non-Irish applicants must independently establish whether they need an Irish visa, residence permission, or another authorisation. Any application costs and compliance obligations remain with the applicant. A support letter may be issued after selection, but selection does not guarantee visa approval.

Participants are responsible for arranging adequate health and other relevant insurance for the full programme period. The opportunity does not indicate that personal insurance costs are reimbursed from the stipend or the call budget.

Selected participants may be required to keep project information, documents, invoices, and other materials confidential during implementation and for five years after project completion. The confidentiality period may be extended where agreed with the European Commission and the DigiWind consortium.

Application data is processed through F6S and project systems for application evaluation and programme management. Applicants should review the applicable F6S privacy information and the DigiWind data-protection provisions before submitting personal documents.

Applicant risk and compliance assessment

This is a highly targeted educational mobility opportunity rather than a conventional research or innovation grant. It is most suitable for individuals seeking structured postgraduate development and industry exposure in offshore renewable energy, not for organisations seeking project finance.

The principal financial risk is that the fixed stipend may be insufficient to cover accommodation, travel, food, local transport, insurance, visa expenses, taxes, and other costs in Ireland. Applicants should secure adequate personal funds before accepting the award.

The principal eligibility risks are nationality restrictions, insufficient academic or professional background, failure to provide certified English evidence, incomplete documentation, and inability to attend physically in Limerick for the full programme.

The principal administrative risk is the inconsistent deadline time shown across the portal metadata and applicant documentation. Submission should be completed well before the earliest stated closing time and confirmation of successful submission should be retained.

Recommended application strategy

  1. 1Confirm nationality, Irish entry permission, and ability to attend in person for all twelve weeks.
  2. 2Prepare a concise CV that highlights renewable energy, offshore wind, electrical systems, digital technologies, programming, statistics, modelling, monitoring, or operations and maintenance.
  3. 3Obtain certified degree awards and transcripts, or prepare robust evidence for the Recognition of Prior Learning route.
  4. 4Secure acceptable English-language evidence before submission and check the validity and score requirements with TUS.
  5. 5Use the motivation statement to explain a specific career objective and connect it to the programme modules and expected outputs.
  6. 6Demonstrate practical understanding of renewable energy systems rather than relying only on general enthusiasm.
  7. 7Prepare a personal budget covering the full period in Limerick, including costs not covered by the stipend.
  8. 8Submit through F6S only and retain the submission confirmation, uploaded documents, and final version of the application.
  9. 9Monitor the DigiWind website and F6S discussion area for amendments, webinars, clarification notices, and changes to the timetable.

Overall assessment

The DigiWind TUS Summer Internship is a focused, fully funded participation opportunity for eligible individuals who want postgraduate-level training and practical exposure to offshore renewable energy. Its principal benefits are the €7,200 fixed stipend, twelve-week TUS experience, 10 ECTS academic component, industry engagement, and access to a specialist European wind-energy skills initiative.

The opportunity is competitive and operationally demanding. Applicants must satisfy strict nationality, education or professional-experience, language, documentation, and attendance requirements.
