Evaluation and selection criteria

A selection committee at TU Darmstadt (Prof. Klaus Hofmann, Prof. Franko Küppers, David Riehl, Viktor Weinelt) evaluates applications using a 35-point scoring system divided into six blocks. The committee considers academic merit as well as gender and socioeconomic inequalities.

Evaluation blockPoints and details
Academic performance (r1)20 points. Calculated from applicant average grade compared against the programme average (g vs gavg). If the committee lacks gavg data the applicant receives 0 points for r1. Data must be certified by the institution awarding the degree.
Additional academic merits (r2)5 points total. Components: +1 extra degree beyond the one used for r1; +1 recognition/award (honours excluded); +1 author of publication/poster; +1 training in sustainability/green electronics; +1 developed projects beyond degree requirements. Points sum independently.
Professional experience (r3)5 points total. Allocation by accredited hours: 100–500 h = 1 point; 500–900 h = 2 points; 900–1800 h = 3 points; >1800 h = 4 points. Additional +1 point for experience in sustainability/green electronics.
Positive gender discrimination (r4)2 points. Assigned to female applicants to improve representation in the field.
Situation of vulnerability (r5)2 points. Awarded if applicant proves socioeconomic vulnerability (evidence can be other grants that recognise this condition).
Motivation and alignment (r6)1 point. Based on applicant motivation and alignment with call objectives.

Distance band travel support (lump sums)

Travel contributions use the EU Distance Calculator and are disbursed as lump sums. Environmentally friendly travel means low-emission modes such as train, bus or carpooling. Distance bands and lump sums are:

Distance band (km)Environmentally friendly travel (EUR) / Non-environmentally friendly travel (EUR)
10 – 99 km56 / 28
100 – 499 km285 / 211
500 – 1999 km417 / 309
2000 – 2999 km535 / 395
3000 – 3999 km785 / 580
4000 – 7999 km1188 / 1188
8000+ km1735 / 1735

Project stage, expected maturity and funded activities

Project stage targeted:education, training and mobility of Master's students. The call supports study and mobility activities at development/validation/demonstration stages of students' theses and practical training, as well as coursework and scientific dissemination (publications, conference attendance). It is not aimed at basic research projects by institutions or at company R&D funding beyond supported internships and training slots.

Funding amount per applicant and co-funding rules

Per-applicant funding:individual grant type caps are listed above; however the maximum total award per beneficiary across all grant types is €10,000. The call text requires applicants to disclose any other scholarships or fellowships they have been awarded or are applying for at the time of application and to report any awards received later. No explicit co-funding by applicants is mandated; eligibility conditions and proof of expenses are required for reimbursements. Co-funding from other sources is not required but concurrent scholarships must be declared.

Application stages and success rates

Application stages:1 (single-stage submission). Applicants submit required documents and the selection committee evaluates and scores applications; successful applicants receive funding decisions communicated electronically. No multi-stage interviews or additional pitching stages are described. The call does not publish a formal success rate; given total budget €40,000 and per-beneficiary caps up to €10,000 the maximum number of full-size awards would be four, but awards can be smaller and distributed to more recipients. Thus exact success rates are not provided and depend on the number and sizes of awards requested in each round.

Templates and application structure

Application forms are structured around Form A (Cover Letter) and Form B (Application of Grant checklist). The call provides a checklist that applicants must complete and attach supporting documentation. Applicants must include a CV, academic transcripts, degree certificates, proof of mobility placement or official endorsement for intended mobility, evidence for social/economic circumstances as applicable, course registration/payment confirmations for training requests, and receipts for any claimed expenses. For grant type 2.6 applicants must attach copies of publications or posters and full publication references and receipts. The call text includes a detailed Form B checklist that applicants should follow when assembling their email submission.

Form A guidance:Write a brief introduction of yourself, academic background/merits, current field of study, circumstances relevant to your application (personal, social, economic, professional), academic performance and future academic/career plans.

Form B checklist items (summary):Form A, CV, documentation required for GPA and academic merits, documentation for social and economic circumstances, average grade certificate, declaration of other scholarships/grants, proof of mobility placement (or signed institutional endorsement), course registration/payment confirmations for training grants, publication/poster copies and receipts for scientific achievement claims, receipts and proofs for documentation and travel expenses.

Scholarship recipients must provide a final report outlining their experience and main outcomes. This report serves to improve the scholarship programme and support dissemination. The final report must include a short questionnaire providing feedback on the scholarship call and a brief video of 30 to 60 seconds focused on the funded activity. This video material will be used in outreach campaigns to engage more students and help ensure project goals continue beyond the official project duration.

Important Conditions and Restrictions

All activities funded under this scholarship must be completed by 30 June 2027. Students must disclose any other scholarships or fellowships they have already been awarded or are currently applying for at the time of application submission. Additionally, students must inform TU Darmstadt of any scholarships or fellowships granted after application submission. Failure to disclose existing or subsequently awarded funding may result in application rejection or scholarship withdrawal.

Footnotes

  1. 1The GreenChips-EDU project aims to address the shortage of skilled workers in the European semiconductor industry by developing joint curricula and education programmes across seven European universities in collaboration with industry and research partners.
  2. 2The project partners include TU Graz, TU Darmstadt, Grenoble INP-UGA, Politecnico di Torino, UPC Barcelona, IST Lisboa, and Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, along with industry partners including Infineon Technologies Austria and Končar Inem.
  3. 3The three eligible Master's programmes at TU Darmstadt are Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies, Information and Communication Engineering, and Information Systems Engineering. Only students enrolled in these specific programmes are eligible for this scholarship call.
  4. 4The six grant types are: coverage for tuition and registration fees (max 3,500 euros), specialized courses and trainings (max 1,500 euros), documentation costs (max 1,000 euros), short-term mobility stays (max 1,500 euros), long-term mobility stays (max 6,000 euros), and scientific achievements (variable amounts up to 2,000 euros for CORE A* conferences).
  5. 5The first application round with deadline 15 February 2026 has already closed. Three additional rounds remain open for applications through June 2027, allowing multiple cohorts of students to apply.
  6. 6The 35-point evaluation system assesses academic performance (20 points), additional academic merits (5 points), professional experience (5 points), gender representation (2 points), socioeconomic vulnerability (2 points), and motivation and alignment with call objectives (1 point).
  7. 7The EU Distance Calculator is used to determine the distance between the home university and host institution. Environmentally friendly travel receives higher support amounts than non-environmentally friendly travel, incentivizing sustainable transportation choices.
